Story Homes launches new bus service for Cockermouth residents

February 2020

As part of our Strawberry Grange development, Story Homes has introduced a new bus service for local residents in Cockermouth at a cost of circa £500,000.

The bus service, which launched on 3 February, will run between 7am and 7pm Monday-Saturday and will be operated by Stagecoach.

The bus route will be from Cockermouth Main Street to the Strawberry Grange development and back, and Cockermouth Town Council has taken the decision to extend the bus route to serve other estates in the area. The bus route shall include Station Street, Lorton Road, Towers Lane, Vicarage Lane and Simonscales Lane and has been designed to offer connections with the existing bus service to Workington. The bus route shall be subject to review as part of an ongoing Travel Plan for the Cockermouth area.

In line with Section 106 (S106)* agreements with Allerdale Borough Council, Story Homes has introduced the new bus service to mitigate any impact the development may have on existing local infrastructure in Cockermouth and to encourage current and future residents to use sustainable forms of transport. Story Homes shall continue to provide the bus service for a period of five years from commencement of its operation.

David Hayward, Development Planner at Story Homes, said: “By working closely with Allerdale Borough Council, we identified that a new bus service in Cockermouth could improve transport connections for local residents and help make Strawberry Grange a sustainable development in accordance with the Allerdale Local Plan.

“This new bus service will bring numerous advantages to the local community in Cockermouth. As well as the environmental benefits such as reduced air pollution, increased fuel efficiency and helping to reduce traffic congestion, the new bus will also increase mobility and connectivity for those who don’t or can’t drive, helping to tackle the growing issue of isolation of the elderly.”

Story Homes will soon launch the second phase of the Strawberry Grange development, which will see the construction of 224 new homes following on from the existing 96 homes which are part of the first phase of the award-winning development.

Strawberry Grange phase 2 will showcase our new ‘Story Collection’ house type range, which has been developed in response to feedback from our customers and market demands. The development will make an important contribution to the district’s housing supply, including the provision of 100 affordable homes available to rent or buy.

* A Section 106 is a legal agreement between an applicant seeking planning permission and the local planning authority, which is used to mitigate the impact of any new homes on the local community and infrastructure.
