House type spotlight: The Emmerson

October 2022

We’re shining a spotlight on our customers, Zara Mulholland, Graduate Engineer, and James Martin, Graduate Rural Surveyor, first-time buyers who have moved into The Emmerson, a 4-bedroom townhouse with three floors.

Although Zara and James were originally looking at a smaller 3-bedroom house type, once they’d seen the flexible living areas The Emmerson offered and how it provided space to grow into, they decided to make the next step up.

Read our Q&A with Zara below to find out more.

Or if you’re short on time, read the top 3 things to love here.

Customers outside their Emmerson

Why choose The Emmerson?

“The Emmerson was the best balance between size and cost for us. We really liked how spacious the living area was at the back of the house, as well as the addition of an en-suite in the main bedroom at the top of the house.

“We actually originally looked at The Harper, a slightly smaller 3-bedroom house, but when we saw The Emmerson was available, and still within our price range, we thought it was worth stretching for.”

Tell us about the spaces in The Emmerson

“We spend a lot of time in the living/dining room at the back of the house. We get the morning sun, and it’s great to enjoy breakfast with the bi-folds wide open – if it’s not too cold! The skylights bring so much light to this area, so it’s a lovely room to be in. In the evenings, it’s perfect for relaxing – especially as there is plenty of space for a nice big sofa.

“We currently have an entire floor dedicated to guests! In addition to the spare bedroom, we plan to make the smallest bedroom into a study, and I currently use one of the bedrooms as a dressing room. So, there is plenty of room to grow into!”

Why did you choose a new build over a second-hand property?

“We always thought we would buy a second-hand property and hadn’t really considered a new build. After discovering Story Homes, we quickly realised the benefits of buying new. The opportunity to move in without having to do any work is a luxury and you can personalise the house to your own taste and style.

“New builds are a lot more energy efficient than older properties too which will be hugely beneficial especially with the current energy prices.”

Does your new build have character?

“Story homes are full of character. I really like the exterior designs with the different brick types and stone sills and we could see the finer detail on the inside too with things like oak handrails on the staircase. We also love the addition of trees, plants and soft landscaping to the estate. This creates a nice feel as you drive through the development and makes it feel more established.

“A new build is like a blank canvas. You can make it entirely your own and it’s really easy to add character yourself. You can put your stamp on it through decoration and furniture.”

Could you add personal touches?

“We love all the choices we were able to make, especially in the kitchen. We added extras like an integrated microwave and washing machine. The fact that they are integrated makes the kitchen feel neat and tidy. Being able to personalise the colours and materials of worktops, cupboards and floors makes the kitchen feel immediately your own.”

Would you recommend Story Homes?

“Yes, we would. In fact, we already have! We get so many compliments on the quality of the house. James’ friend has bought a house just around the corner, he’s gone for The Bailey.”
